Central Bank – Going Green!

Central Bank has always felt a responsibility to contribute to the betterment of our community. One issue that is quickly gaining momentum is environmental-friendly corporate practices.

Central Bank’s Green Initiatives:

    • We participate in e-Recycling. Any old electronic equipment is recycled.

    • All paper that is used is 10% post consumer.

    • We use soy ink for all of our marketing materials.

    • All of our cleaning products are environmentally friendly.

    • We are phasing out the use of Styrofoam cups and are using paper cups made of recycled material for customers and guests of the bank. Many employees use their own cup or mug instead of paper.

    • Central Bank recycles whenever possible. All of our shredded paper is also recycled.

    • Currently, we recycle approximately 75 ink cartridges per year.

    • We ask employees to print in black and white instead of color whenever possible and to print in Econo mode which saves on ink usage.

    • Employees reuse paperclips, binder clips, rubber bands and folders.

    • Give customers the option to sign-up for e-Statements instead of receiving a paper copy of their statements.

    • We have recently purchased a Ford Escape Hybrid to use for bank business.

    • Bike racks will be installed at our facilities in 2008. The biggest impact on reducing your carbon footprint is transportation.

Green Building Intiatives:

We’re also taking a leadership role when it comes to building energy-efficient facilities.

Central Financial Center

Central Bancompany's Financial Center at 111 E. Miller St. has been recognized as an energy efficient building promoting environmentally responsible construction. The Financial Center’s design considered and incorporated the careful application of sustainable practices and materials, including:

    • Maximal use of natural light

    • Fluorescent fixtures with optimized energy performance

    • Floor carpeting with backing containing post-consumer materials

    • Energy Star-rated appliances

    • FSC-certified wood on Knoll workstations

    • The extensive use of natural stone and cork building materials

    • The building contains a cantilevered sunshade to limit solar gain in the summer and allow solar gain in the winter months.

    • The glass skin is highly efficient e-gas filled thermal windows. Additionally, the white lines or Frit is actually ceramic strips that capture the heat from the sun during the winter months. It is a source of passive solar energy.

    • The outer bank-of-lights are controlled by photo cells and turn off to conserve energy on bright days.

    • The heating and cooling systems (HVAC) are highly efficient.

    • The lighting and HVAC are controlled by computer systems to maximize energy savings during high usage as well as vacant modes.

    • The facility's roof utilizes light-colored materials to extend the life of the membrane roof system. reduce energy loads and

Central Motor Bank

The Motor Bank had a 1960’s heating and cooling system that was recently replaced with ground source heat pumps. The new system offers a more sustainable energy usage and allows for zoning the space in the building. This allows for heating and cooling only those spaces in-use. Computerized sensors enhance monitoring and control the system to maximize efficiencies.

Planning & Design

The current site renovation at the Motor Bank incorporates more ecologically-friendly practices.

    • the site plan encourages pedestrian access and “walkability” with safe and accessible sidewalks, crosswalks, and bike paths

    • The modular paving blocks allows storm-water to percolate through the pavers and remain on-site, thus lowering the water needs of the existing plant materials and reducing the run-off.

    • Trees have been selected to shade the building with open shade which reduces the cooling loads on the building

    • Exterior lighting is energy efficient and designed to minimize security concerns with fewer fixtures.

    • Promote work environments that easily integrates physical activity into daily routines

Knoll is absolutely a leader within its industry in supporting sustainable practices. Knoll has been developing and implementing clean technology for more than 25 years. Our continued use of Knoll products is attributed to the company’s commitment to quality, value and its corporate policies regarding sustainability. Key Knoll innovations that have changed manufacturing practices in the contract furniture industry include:

    • implementation of a Sustainable Wood Policy targeted to protect endangered forests and promote sustainable harvesting of wood resources. The Wood Policy is expected to be fully implemented in 2010.

    • a comprehensive Energy Management Program targeted to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.

    • replacing contact cement with non-VOC emitting hot melt adhesives and developing the spray equipment for their application

    • developing water-based finishes to replace HAP – and VOC – emitting solvent-based finishes; and formaldehyde-free backing materials for wood products. The non-formaldehyde-emitting urethane coating for wood introduced by Knoll in 2006 is currently being used in the residential furniture and kitchen cabinet industries as well as the contract furniture industry.
