Improving your Medical Exam Results

Depending on your age and the amount of life insurance coverage you need, you may be required to submit to a medical exam, which will form the primary basis of the company’s decision to underwrite your policy. For instance, a male over the age of 40 buying $250,000 of life insurance may be required to undergo a complete exam, which may include a physical, and EKG, a urine sample, and blood work. The results of the exam will affect the pricing of your policy, either negatively or positively. Negative results could boost your premium costs by as much as 50% or even prevent you from obtaining the coverage.

To ensure the most favorable results from your medical exams it’s recommended that you take the following measures:

  • Sleep long and hard the two nights before your exam.
  • Don’t drink any alcohol the day before the exam.
  • Caffeinated drinks, such as coffee, tea or sodas should be avoided.
  • Watch your salt intake in the days leading up to your exam.
  • Don’t work your body to hard. Stay somewhat inactive the day before the exam.
