Preparing Your Lake House for Summer

Homeownership

Just like your home needs some TLC, your lake house deserves a little prep work to ensure a smooth sailing summer by the water!

As the weather warms up, it's time to get your lake house prepped for a summer full of fun! Whether you’re planning weekend visits to your lake house, hosting family gatherings, or renting it out for extra income, doing maintenance now will ensure a stress-free summer. Here’s everything you need to think about before the warm weather arrives.

  1. General Maintenance

Walk around the exterior of your house to inspect any damages that could have occurred while you were away. Areas to check include roofing, siding, and patio if you have it. Summer often brings thunderstorms, so ensure your gutters aren’t clogged and there are no leaks.

Summertime also brings extreme heat, so ensure your HVAC system and fans work - getting stuck without air on a hot July day isn’t fun for anyone! As a sustainable investment, consider getting a smart thermostat so you can save on energy when you’re away. Finally, check all appliances and plumbing to catch any issues before summer arrives.

  1. Dock and Boat Prep

If you have a dock and a boat it’s a good idea to check for any issues months before use. You’ll be spending a lot of time near the lake, so inspect the docks for any loose or rusted boards. Schedule any boat repairs well before summer to avoid the rush at maintenance shops.

Check water safety gear like life jackets for wear and tear, especially if you have children. These seasonal items are often cheaper in the off-season, so consider replacing them early.

  1. Home Insurance

Review your homeowners insurance to ensure you have flood coverage, especially if your lake house is in a high-risk area. Additionally, confirm that storm damage including wind, hail, and falling trees, are included in your policy. If you own a boat or often go into the lake, consider additional liability coverage. This can protect you in case of accidents, injuries, or property damage caused by watercraft or recreational activities.

  1. Stock Up on Summer Essentials

Before you start spending every weekend at your lake house, make sure it's stocked with essentials like towels, bedding, toilet paper, and kitchen items. There’s nothing worse than planning a grill night only to realize you can't enjoy your favorite hot dogs and hamburgers because the grill isn’t clean!

Don’t forget summer essentials like sunscreen, aloe vera, and bug spray. Consider buying in bulk so you don’t run out!

  1. General Safety Tips

Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and ensure your fire extinguishers are up to date. Review water safety rules with family and friends, and create an emergency plan in case of extreme weather or power outages.

Along with general cleaning, these tips will help get your lake house ready for a summer full of unforgettable memories!
